Keyboard suddenly disabled

Windows XP Home Edition (Sony VAIO OEM)
Friday (Feb 20th), a client called to say he was having trouble with his
keyboard. He said it suddenly stopped working. I had done some work on his
PC last week and all was working when I left.
Saturday, I booted up my own system (which happens to be almost identical to
his (Sony VAIO running OEM XP software) and I am having the same issue on my
own system. I did not run my system on Friday, so it appears that this issue
affected both machines on the same day.
The keyboard works to access BIOS, but it stops working as soon as the
Windows welcome screen appears.
I am able to boot from LINUX live CDs and boot cds and the keyboard works
fine in those OS environments.
Thanks in advance for any ideas/help

This might be a Post installation issues of Microsoft update installed on
your computer likely to be a Driver conflict with updates. (Very Rare)

It sounds like the keyboard and mouse drivers are corrupted, I have seen
this happen before, its a rare fault though and maybe symptomatic of other
issues such as a failing OS or HD.

You can try a repair by booting from the Windows CD and choosing the
autorepair function, this should replace any missing files.

Failing that it maybe a case of doing an over the top install from the CD,
but try the above first

Desktop or laptop?

If wireless keyboard change batteries.

Check Event Viewer for errors in the System log.

Have a look in the System and Application logs of Event Viewer and
post copies of any Error or Warning Report appearing after an attempt to
restart. Please note all Reports have a date and time to help you relate
to what has happened on screen previously.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the suggestion about using event viewer. Unfortunately, I had
already done a complete Windows re-install before I saw your post, but I’m
sure that would have given me some valuable info if I had the patience to
wait. This seems to have been the result of a bad Windows update. I am just
hoping it never happens again.
