XP locking my laptop and screen is not full

I have just installed Windows XP. I purchased from Journey Education with is
a store for college students to purchase MS products. I installed XP
yesterday. Today I am trying to download Norton Antivirus 2004 to my laptop
(I have already done this my desktop). Once it gets to about 80% complete the
laptop locks up. I have to force the system to shut down, Ctrl-Alt-Del does
not even work.
The other problem is the desktop does not fill the entire screen, it was
when I was using Windows 98SE.

You have purchased two copies of Norton Antivirus? I'm fairly certain that
Norton will insist on your buying two copies to install on two computers. I
would never use Norton products, they usually cause more problems than they
solve. As for your display problem, are you using the native resolution of
the laptop display such as 800 x 600, 1028 x 764, or whatever? LCD
displays prefer to be run at their native settings. This may be why you
don't see all of the screen. Check the display settings.

I purchased one copy with an extended dowload service, which allows me to
download to other computer using the same e-mail address on both computers.
It worked before. Do you think this is a Norton Problem?
Second issue - the laptop is set up at 800 x 600. As I said before the
entire desktop was filled before I installed Windows XP. Under Display it
reads: (Multiple Monitors) on ATI RAGE Mobility (HP).

Set the laptop display to 1024x768.. this resolution is optimum for TFT
screens.. if the fonts are too small, set the screen font size a little
larger..

Mike - thank you that worked.

Now who can solve my other problem. Should I take it up with Norton? Or are
you passing the buck? I still can't get Norton Antivirus to download without
the system locking up completely. HELP.

I have no liking for Norton products at all.. they can be pigs to install
and uninstall.. the best support as I understand is the Norton website..

Mike - I called Symantec. He said to try again after he helped me removed a
few files and do some other stuff. I downloaded again and it completed. While
doing the pre-scan for virus the laptop locked up completely. I rebooted. It
locked up while rebooting. I remobboted again. It locked up while dialing
into the internet. THIS MUST BE A WINDOWS XP PROBLEM. Someone must have a
resolution to this. I can't be the first one to have this problem. What is
your next suggestion?

If you remove Norton, do you still get problems? Does XP function normally?

Mike - Il will try it. But keep in mind that I was having this problem when I
was trying to download the Norton Antivirus. So I will most likely continue
to have the problem. But I will remove the program and reboot. Give me a few
minutes and I will get back.

Okay here is what is happening. The icons were on the desktop but they were
not in the add remove programs. So I clicked on the install Norton to finish
the process. The program asked if I want to do a pre-scan, I click no. Then I
proceeded with the install. A few minutes into the install the laptop locked
up. SO, this tells me that it can't be Norton because it was never completely
installed to begin with. I understand you don't care for Norton, but I have
like it and I have it. I need to know your next solution. I am a beliver that
it is XP. Is it possible I have a bad copy? If not, then what is your next
solution?

hanging. This is a serious problem and I have very disturbed about this

Norton 2004 has something of a chequered history with XP.. whether you like
the program or not is entirely immaterial.. I do not advocate Norton
products, and some of the problems that you are presently encountering are
reasons why I don't.. Symantec support ALWAYS blame XP, as do most
application support centres, but then you would expect them to do that.. I
have yet to see or hear of anybody who upgraded to XP and didn't have
problems of some kind with Norton 2004 and earlier versions afterwards..

The problem of Norton not working after an XP upgrade is not the fault of
XP.. did you disable ant-virus before upgrading?.. if not, why not?.. did
you run the XP compatibility advisor before upgrading?

Please also bear in mind that this is a newsgroup, not a call centre.. we
are all volunteers, and few of us are magicians.. please be patient..

Well Mike consider this my last reply. If I could just get on the damm laptop
once without it crashing then maybe I could do your suggestion below. It
crashed again while turning it on and then again while dialing up the
Internet. I give up. You tried. I will just have to take to a shop and pay
someone to look at it. This has gotten on my last nerve and I can't tolerate
the bullshit anymore. Goodbye

I have almost the same problem, but can't find any solution. I feel we both
have a problem with mobility radeon, which I believe is not compatible with
xp, or sp2. I am trying to get help from ati and sony, unsuccesfully
