I am building myself a new PC and as my wife has an XP installation disk
for a laptop that burnt out and is now unusable, I thought I would use
that. Is that legal and will it work ok?

Thanks

Only if its a "Retail Version" of Windows XP and not an
"OEM Version". An OEM version of Windows XP is non-
transferable to a different computer since its license is
permanently tied to the original computer it was installed on.
