XP Laptops will not join a 2000 Domain

We have three XP Pro (recently reinstalled and patched) laptops that will not join a 2000 domain. These laptops are various Compaq models. Other XP Pro computers (Dell Desktops) join the domain fine. The laptops were reinstalled with the standard XP Pro CD while the Dells had the preinstalled version. I have tried different CD's with the same results. They have internet access and TCP/IP seems to be working fine

Here's the details. When an attempt to join the laptop to the domain is made, the server does show an acount for the laptop, but it is disabled. This join attempt was made by an admin account. There is an error message with the following

"The following error occured while attempting to join the domain "xxxxxxxxx.com":

an

"The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

Also, there is a coresponding event on the server stating "Audit Failure 577

The following article seems to have the same error messages, but i dont have nwlink and am only using tcp/ip

I had a similar issue with some PC's that had F-Secure 4 installed on them,
F-Secure 5 cured the problem.

OK, we have Norton AV on these already which is a similar product I suppose. I'll try uninstalling it to see if it helps with the domain join

Thanks!

Make sure that the built in ICF firewalls are disabled, that the time zones are
correct and in synch with the domain controller, and that their dns preferred server
in tcp/ip properties is the IP address for the domain controller, and no ISP dns
servers are listed. It may also help to run netdiag on those computers looking for
any failed tests and look in their Event Viewer for pertinent errors. Netdiag is on
the install cd in the support/tools folder where you will have to run the setup
there. --- Steve
