XP Laptop Can't Get DHCP IP from Wireless Access Point

Hi there!

I have two WinXP laptop that can connect to the AP and get
a DHCP IP address but another WinXP laptop that can not.

I've simplified the AP - so that it's not using WEP.

I've deleted all of the wireless profiles in the Preferred
networks section.

The Internet Protocol is set for "Obtain an IP address
automatically".

The WinXP laptop does say that it connects to the AP but
it keeps getting an automatic reserved ip address
(168.254.x.x). It just can't seem to find the DHCP server
on the AP.

Any suggestions?

A simple AP may not be a DHCP server. If you are sure that your
"AP" is set as the DHCP server, then check its params to make sure it
can issue enough IPAs for all your PCs, and to make sure it has
not blocked (filtered out) the MAC address of the failing PC.

Compare the params for the failing PC with the good ones, esp.
the DHCP client setting and the DHCP server and gateway IPs.

Can the bad PC ping the DHCP server? If not, it can't do DHCP.

You can also assign a static IP address in the same subnet as the current
IP scheme and then see if you can ping the AP.
That'll confirm that the other settings such as SSID, etc are configured
properly.
