That is an OEM disk from the sounds of things and according to the EULA you
can not transfer it.

so, if i piggyback the old hard drive into the new machine with the original
install of xp, that would do the trick?

I just tried that with an Emachine.....OEM version of XP
I moved the Emachines HD to the new computer and tried a Repair Installation
of an OEM disc I had lying around.
It did not work...........the key was not accepted.
Since I was already using that OEM version on another machine.
So I went and bought an Upgrade version of XP and used that to do a new
install ...it read the OEM version on the HD and allowed me to install and
activate.

One of the reasons that an OEM version of the OS is less expensive is that
you can't transfer it to a new computer according to the EULA. So, to answer
your question, you can't just toss the HDD into a new box.

As long as it's installed as a slave and the OS isn't running it's fine.
