Xp keeps looping when starting

Hi

I was cleaning up some unwanted/uninvited emails and
suddenly the whole computer went out - dreaded blue
screen then instant turn off of the entire syste. Since
then I have not been able to get xp to go past the
startup window - it keeps giving me the screen telling me
to go into safe mode ect, but when I choose safe mode (or
any of the other possible prompts) it keeps turning
itself off and just running thru the whole loop again.

Anyone got any ideas?

Do you have your XP CD so that you can boot from it and try and repair the
installation?

Yes I do - but when you say repair the installation, what
do you mean? Also, will this do anything to the data on
my machine? VERY embarrassed to say that I have not
backed up for a few weeks.
