xp joining win2000 domain

i have a laptop running XP pro - i want it to join our win2000 network .
when i run through the network identification wizard it fails with an error
message telling me the specified server could not perform the requested
operation.
i have a win2000 laptop that has joined the domain fine

Make sure the computer name does not already exist in AD, if so, delete it.

yes, i done that but it has behaved in a strange way -
1.
i made sure the computer was NOT in AD then ran through the wizard on the
laptop to join it to the domain.
2. it failed with the message see below.
3. in AD though it had appeared in the list but and been disabled.
4. if i adisabled it then tried to jion again i still get that message and
it becomes disabled again.
(the other laptop with win2000 joined fine)
