XP installed, can I add Vista as a dual boot?

Way to go. Sounds like you will have a safe, useful setup when you have the
final Vista installed.

Thanks Colin.

Yes this is unclear. I think the meaning of "File Backup" refers to files
created using the backup utility rather than Shadow Copy or Previous
Versions. Does this make sense?

That is my understanding also. In fact I'm sure that's right. I'm just
uncertain as to whether or not file backups are also created from snapshots
taken by volsnap.sys. They might be.

One way to check is to try it in a dual boot XP/Vista virtual machine using
VPC and just see what happens to backup files after booting into XP. This
would require three virtual hard drives (one for the backup files).

It isn't necessary to test on metal. It is much easier to use VPC. That's
one of its strengths. Use dynamically expanding vhd's to conserve host disk
space and turn on undo disks to be able to revert for various scenarios that
should each have the same starting point.
