XP installation and corrupted HD

I am trying to install XP Pro and early in the
installation process I get an error message that says that
my C drive is corrupted and cannot be repaired so the
installation cannot proceed. The same happens if I use D
drive as the install location.

My HD is a 30G Maxtor. I have run all the diagnostics that
came with the drive and everything is OK. Diskscan finds
no errors. I have started from scratch and re-partionioned
the HD and formatted C and D, and did a clean install of
XP Pro. Same message.

When I re-install my old operating system which is Windows
Me everything works fine.

It seems hard to believe that XP could find a fault with
the HD that nothing else shows is there and a format
doesn't correct. So what is the problem?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Just had a similar problem and it boiled down to faulty motherboard or CPU.
Replacing both fixed it with all other existing components proving OK.
