XP install problem

Ken

When I try to upgrade my win98 to XP home I get the
following:

The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is
corrupt or missing.Value 0 on the line in section
(Winntdirectories) with key"." Setup Can not continue
press F3 to quit.

When I quit it just goes back to setup and gives me the
same error. If I try unistalling it says drive C: is
corrupt. I have run WD checks on the hard drive and it
says there are no errors.

Any suggestions??

Is this during a CLEAN install?
If not that's probably your best option. Format the partition and do a clean
install.

How do I do a clean install if my winXP is only an
upgrade version?
You can do a clean install with an upgrade version. Format the drive
(and understand this will erase *all* data so have your files backed
up) and boot with your XP cd. Shortly after the installation starts,
you'll get a prompt to insert your qualifying media - in your case,
your Win98 cd - and then just follow the prompts. Here is a link to
information about a clean install:

Greetings --

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the
Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and
format partitions as part of the installation process.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. The Upgrade CD checks to
see if a qualifying OS is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks
you to insert the installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately,
an OEM "Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must
have a true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and
*.cab files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.
