XP ICS problem

Hello all,

I have a problem with ICS in Windows XP.

My setup is:

- PC1 connected to internet with an Alcatel ADSL USB modem
- PC1 connected to PC2 with a crosscable

I ran the ICS setup wizards - all was working for a few days, but now not
anymore. I cannot get to the internet anymore from PC2.

Tests I did:
- PC1 can ping PC2
- PC2 can ping PC1
- PC1 and PC2 can share files
- PC1 has internet access
- PC2 can't ping anything; when using a web browser it wants to start a
dialup connection connection (using the laptop's has a builtin 56k modem)

When I enable the "Allow other network users to control or disable the
shared Internet connection" feature, then I can see the Internet Gateway on
PC2 and I can shutdown and start the ADSL connection on PC1 from PC2.

So it seems that all the pieces are there, but I just don't know how to
tell PC2 to use the shared internet connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings,
Bert

On PC2, run Internet Explorer, go to Tools | Internet Options |
Connections, and configure it to never dial a connection.

These tests should help you find the Internet sharing problem:

1. On PC1, right click the local area network connection and click
Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On PC2, right click the local area network connection and click
Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on PC2 and
enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on
PC2. They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://216.239.39.100
http://www.google.com

1. On PC1, right click the local area network connection and click
Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

All ok here.
2. On PC2, right click the local area network connection and click
Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

Aha, DNS Server was set to something else (200.x.x.x). For some reason
it was manually configured. It set it back to automatic and now it is
correctly set to 192.168.0.1.

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on PC2 and
enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1

Works. (Worked already before correcting the DNS).
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

These don't work. I also set the connectoin options in Internet Explorer
to "Never dial a connection".

Any ideas?

One funny things: if I do a right-click on my ADSL connection in Network
Connections and choose Properties> Advanced tab> Settings buttons> then
I get "The port number is already used by another entry. Please enter a
unique port number." (Descripition of the service: msmsgs
(192.168.0.26:123320)37616 TCP. -> and 192.168.0.26 was the ip of PC2
just some time ago). Does it have anything to do with this?

Thanks for the quick answer.

Hi Bert,

Can you give us the ipconfig /all info showing the external interface of
PC1?
Have you tried disabling ICS on PC1, rebooting and then enabling ICS again?
Do you have the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) enabled on either
computer? Any other firewall software?
From PC2 can you try this - open a command window and type "nslookup". At
the nslookup prompt type "www.yahoo.com". Post the results here.

Thanks,
