XP Home won't shut down (but used to)

Hi, I hope you can help me.

I've had XP home since '03 & my HP tower also came with Norton Anitvirus. I
used to use Verizon DSL but in January switched to Comcast HSI (& McAfee
comes free with that & our Norton expired last month anyways).

I had Norton professionally uninstalled & McAfee installed last month & then
when I'm done for the day & go to Start, Shut Down it goes as far as the
"Windows is shutting down" page but it just stays on that page no matter how
long I leave it.

So I uninstalled McAfee & tried to shut down & it still wouldn't shut down
so it doesn't appear as though McAfee is the problem (& it's not Comcast
because it shut down fine until last month).

I played around with the various options in the "power options properties"
dialog box, then it DID shut down but after going in & trying to shut down
again the next day (& not changing any of the power options) it woudn't shut
down.

I just want to get it to shut down the right way when I'm done with it for
the day & for it to continue to do that after I install a realistic antivirus
program (at this point I'll just re-subscribe with Norton & pay if it means
this works).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I don't know what else to
try. Please put me in contact with someone that you think can help me with
this if it turns out that you can't. Thanks in advance. :)

Professionally uninstalled Norton, sorry but I doubt the validity of that
statement. Obviously, you've got Symantec remnants (Services) still
that are mapped. Until all or most Symantec Non Plug-&Play drivers
and services are removed - the machine is going to have problems at
shutdown. I've done literally hundreds of Norton Uninstalls and it is not
an easy thing to do - I actually created an uninstall guide not jokingly
entitled "KillNorton.Doc".

I just said "professionally uninstalled" so people would know that I hired a
tech to do it & that it wasn't just me overlooking something as I know I'm a
beginner at this stuff. I'm new here too so I must ask yoiu how/where I get
your KillNorton.Doc?

- I was unable to find any documentation on the internet about
killnorton.doc. If this was a personal 'log' then what does it contain?

I use the' Total Uninstall 3 ' app to take a snapshot of my computer before
and after installing another program so it can later remove all traces of
that install.

Too bad though, I installed Norton first. When Wetcamel said pro uninstall
he probably meant an application such as this or a 'killnorton.exe'.
Maybe since youve obviously have some time on your hands you can convert
this kill.doc to kill.exe for distribution??

You could try disabling your ComPort, We install a program at work that causes computers not to shut down, unless we disable the ComPort

Norton is known for not being easy to get rid of ...I suggest to go to the
Symantec website and look for the removal tools for the version you "had"
installed

it won't hurt ...and it may help :>
