My computer came with Win98 - last fall I upgraded OS to
XP Home - kid's use has all manner of junk - I'd like to
reformat and build out fresh - must I start the OS rebuild
all the way back at the OEM Win98 then install the XP Home
upgrade - then apply all the service packs?
If you are going to do a total clean start, then pretty near that. An
OEM 98 CD is not going to get recognised as evidence by XP setup. What
you could *try* is running the CD from the present system, in Install
taking New Install, and there when it asks where, hit ESC to select and
delete the present partition and make a new one. It is possible that
this will recognise that the system was a legitimate upgrade and will
not ask for more, and the time for the test is not great. But you are
going to have to run all the updating.
It would be worth getting the consolidated CD of security updates (which
includes SP1) - order at
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
It is getting a bit out of date, but if you also got the downloads for
the following on a broadband , especially
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;835732 (Sasser worm patch)
and the
837009 (OE Cumulative)
832894 (IE Cumulative)
828741 (XP Cumulative)
828028 (ASN 1)
837001 (Jet Engine)
and burned them to CD too, you would be near up to date. It is
essential to get the firewall into action before connecting to the
Internet even for a moment.
I would defer the needed activation until you have things working - give
it a week say - and then get on the net and Start - All Programs -
Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows where it should activate
on the net again with no trouble
