my daughter's college has issued a notice stating it
cannot guarantee connectivity to the college network
using home edition, and recommending professional
addition. My questions are:
1. Is there really a problem, or can home be configured
appropriately?
2. If I need professional edition, can I buy the upgrade
only or do I need the full operating system (the box for
the upgrade does not list xp home as one of the operating
systems to which the upgrade applies).

heck get her the student version be cheaper yet
but an upgrade for home to pro should work

Probably yes. It is probably a net run as an 'NT Domain' and XP Pro is
needed to 'join' such a domain.

Upgrade is fine. You will probably find it can be bought cheaply as an
Academic license through the college
