it to have XP Professional.

By buying a Pro Upgrade CD. And your brother should have checked with the
College on the system requirements BEFORE buying.

How long ago was the machine purchased? It may be within the store's
return policy window. If so return the machine and request an
identical or equivalent model with XP Pro instead of Home.

Another option would be to contact Sony's tech support about the
availablility of an XP Pro upgrade for the newly purchased system.

Last resort would be to purchase a retail upgrade copy of XP Pro and
install that. But try the other options first.
