XP Home system can't install drivers for USB flash drive

Got an XP Home system (now on SP2) that won't properly install drivers when
you attached a USB flash drive (Lexar Jumpdrive Sport 1GB). I was hoping
after all the Windows Updates and such, the problem would go away but
apparently not. I've also tried removing all the USB drivers from the
Device Manager and letting XP reinstall them, and when that didn't work I
pruned the USB part of the Enum branch in the registry and let it re-detect
everything. Still won't work.

What happens is you plug in the flash drive.... the "Welcome to the Found
New Hardware Wizard" pops up and asks you if Windows can connect to Windows
Update to search for software. Doesn't matter which choice you make here,
none help. Next screen asks if XP should install the software automatically
or install from a list or specific location. Choosing automatic doesn't
work, it ends with the "Cannot Install this Hardware" window and ends. If
you choose a specific location, I've tried all sorts of paths in the
"Include this location in the search" field (such as c:\i386, C:\windows,
C:\windows\system32, etc) and none work. Another option on this screen is
"Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" but I can't find "USB
Mass Storage Driver" anywhere on the list.

I know the Jumpdrive is good since it works in other PCs. I have confirmed
that USBSTOR.SYS and DISK.SYS are both in windows\system32\drivers like
they should be. Computer is an HP Pavilion 525c.

I've tried a USB mouse on this PC, and it installed the drivers for that
without error and the mouse worked, so it's not all things USB. Apparently
just USB mass storage.

I'd just reinstall XP over XP, but unfortunately this is a consumer OEM
copy. There's no original CD, just the COA sticker on the case. I could try
and find another XP Home CD, but even if I was lucky enough to have the CD
key work, I wouldn't be able to preserve the activation since it's not only
OEM but XP Home. Urgh. HP will want to just do a "recovery" which will wipe
the hard drive clean and return it to how it left them, which is not
acceptable. So I'm left trying to repair this, but hypothetically this
should be simple if we can just pin down what files are missing/damaged.

you should not need drivers for that device xp has them. I just purchased a
Memorex 1 gig flash drive. I plugged it in and a minute later it was ready
to go also using sp2 all updates. Just a guess but the drive might need
formatted but how do you format it if windows doesn't see it?

I know, that's the problem. There's something messed-up with this
particular XP system. I'm trying to fix it.
