XP Home SP2 Will not shut down from start menu

I am unable to shut XP down from start menu. I select shut down, the
computer goes all the way trough to "Windows is shutting down" and it just
sets there.

Sounds like some programme is running in the background, before trying
to shutdown press ctrl alt del and see what processes are running and
anything that looks suspicous put the name of it into google to find
out more.
