XP Home SP2 Right-click menu missing text

I noticed that when I right-click a file (i.e. .txt) I have two "Open"
options, they both say open. It appears that the bold one (first item in the
options list) is a normal 'open', and the non-bold one (several lines down)
is the one that used to be "open with". Selecting the second 'open' gives me
the "open with" program selection window. How do I make the second 'open"
selection display the "Open with" text again?

Birdman,

Is this happening to all the file types or for .txt only?

It happens to most file types i.e. the right-click menu is different for
different file types.

The top part of the menu for a .txt file:
Open
Print
Edit
Open
--
The first "Open" brings up the file in Notepad, the second brings up the
"Open with" menu.

Top part of the menu for a .jpg file:
Preview
Edit
Print
Open
Resize Pictures
Preview
--
Both "Preview's" bring up the file in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. The
"Open" brings up the "Open with" menu.

Top part of the menu for a .doc file:
Open
Edit
New
Open
--
The top three items Open, Edit, New-- bring up the document in Word. The
second "Open" brings up the "Open with" menu.

So you can see that the menu text selection for the "Open with" menu only
states "Open" now, not the "Open with" I used to see.

Does that help?

Birdman,

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\open

Export the key to a file (File => Export option) and post the contents here.
The additional entry is probably coming from there.

I did not find the directory *exactly* as you stated. I found
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\Openas and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Shell\Shell\Open. I
will list them both to save time just in case.

Birdman,

Can you export this key fully ( as a REG file? ) and post here.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell

BTW, that's the key causing the problem. You have two options:

1. Backup and delete the key (open-with option won't be available in the
context menu)
-or-
2. In the right-pane, set the (default) value in this registry key to "Open
with..."
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\openas

Follow the 2nd method, now, "Open with..." would be available in the context
menu.

Thank you Ramesh, the second option worked. I know it's just a minor
phrasing but it was sometimes confusing. If you still need me to post the
..reg file before and/or after the fix per. your previous reply let me know.

Birdman

Glad that helped, Birdman. BTW, I don't require the REG file now!
