XP Home SP2 limited connection

P

Paul Cook

I'm working on a Dell 4600 running XP Home. It has an onboard Intel
Pro/100 VE network adapter. Every time I install SP2, I get a limited
connection error. When I uninstall SP2, it works fine again.

Here is what I have done so far:

I ran winsockxpfix.exe

I installed Windows patch KB884020

I installed RegFix.reg

The only suggestion I couldn't try was to uncheck the 802.1x
authentication. This computer does not have an authentication tab on
the network connection properties window. Every other WinXP computer
I've looked at has that. At least those with SP2. Does anyone know
why that might be missing? Or how I could maybe get it to show up?

Can anyone please help me? This thing is driving me nuts, and it's
starting to make me look like I don't know what I'm doing.

Thank you.

Go to Dell's website for your specific machine and update the drivers.
See if that helps.

I'm facing the same problem with 2 PCs running Win XP pro SP1+SP2 with one
TREND TEW-421CB Wifi 802.11g PCMCIA adapter in each computer trying to
connect to an AP/Routeur SMC2804WBR

It's running fine with my old ELSA MC-11 802.11b WiFi adapters in each
computer.

So, It seems it's something related to the new SP2 WiFi management !!!

It has to do with the 802.1x encryption authentication, but not for
WiFi. This is just a regular onboard wired network adapter. However,
802.1x encryption can be used on both. I seem to need a way to
disable it's authentication on this pc. But, the authentication tab
does not show up. I have upgraded the drivers to no avail. It's not
just this network adapter either. I've installed other nic's and had
the same thing happen every time.

The Authentication tab only appears when the Wireless Zero Configuration
service is started. This applies for both wired and wireless connections. If
you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), the Authentication tab
for a wireless connection is buried under the Wireless Network tab. Open the
Network Connections folder, right-click the Wireless Network Connection, and
then choose Properties. Click the Wireless Network tab, under Preferred
networks, click the SSID (the network name), and then click Properties.
Click the Authentication tab.

To determine if the Wireless Zero Configuration service is running, follow
these steps:

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click
Command Prompt.
2. Type sc query wzcsvc, and then press ENTER
3. If the Windows Zero Configuration service is running, the words "STATE :
# RUNNING" will appear.

To start the service, for example, open the command prompt and type the
following line and press ENTER:

net start wzcsvc

I got the link but executing this patch doesn't solve the limited connection
problem.
It seems to me, it's really the authentification 802.1x process which is
making problrem under SP2 in certain conditions !!! I can't find the
solution

I'm in the same boat. The winsock patch seems to only be meant for
SP1 systems. I really need to find a way to remove the 802.1x
authentication from this machine with SP2. I don't need it.

There is a command that you can try. It didn't work for me, but
others have had better luck.

Type this in at a command prompt: netsh winsock reset catalog

Give that a try. Good luck.

Hello Paul,

I tried the command "netsh winsock reset catalog" and it doesn't solve the
problem;
The Wifi connection is detected but the adaptor is still waiting for network
and looping for a while !!! ... It succeeded 2 ou 3 times to connect after
hours of looping !!! it's quite amazing !!! I don't understand !!!

Thanks for helping;
Good night !!
