Hi

I'm trying to fix a friend's XP Home SP2 box which stopped having internet
access. (He can't pinpoint the time at which he didn't have access any
more.)

With a static IP, I can see other PC's on my LAN, and I can connect to my
gateway from the PC.

I can't ping any internet addresses at all, and any program that tries to
access the internet (like for virus updates) doesn't get access either.

I've uninstalled his NIC, and reinstalled it. No success.

I've reinstalled Home (repair installation) - still no success.

Could someone please give me some more assistance?

Any help much appreciated!

Checked the SP2 firewall configuration?

Did you also specify the DNS server settings in the IP setup? Since you are
using "static" IP address, you must tell the IP addresses of the two IPS DNS
servers.

Thanks Yves.

The DNS entries match those specified in other PCs in the LAN.

I've tried it with the SP2 Firewall on and off - I still can't get to the
internet.

Anything else I could try?

Just to answer my own question - got this sorted...

By rebooting my Netgear gateway - not sure why this didn't like a new
connection getting made, but after rebooting the gateway, the problematic PC
could suddenly get access on my network.
