I have an Actiontec R3010UW Cable router which connects
to my main computer through Ethernet, and to a laptop
through Wireless connection. Prior to installing SP2, I
had the network set up fine, so that printers and files
could be shared.
Having installed SP2 - the shared files and printer has
disappeared from the laptop.
I've tried a couple of times to run the network
connection wizard - choosing the option "This computer
connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or
through another computer on my network" on both
computers, but they can't see one another still.

Incidentally, the printer is set to share, as are the
files. The firewall is configured to allow the folders to
be shared with others on the network.

If I click on View workgroup computers, then I only see
each individual computer, and not the other on the
network.

What am I doing wrong - and howcome the network settings
disappeared with SP2 download?

1st option suggestion is to remove Firewalls (there
aren't any installed, only the one that comes with SP2).

The second webpage seems mainly connection to the
internet. The first suggestion is to check the settings
on the network connections, but the home network doesn't
appear....

or here

The network connection is the NIC you use to connect from your computer;
i.e., Local Area Connection if wired, Wireless Connection if... It is
found in the Control panel, Network Connections applet.

I delved around the new Windows Firewall (coming from
SP2), and I think the firewall settings there are now
inhibiting connection to the network. Strange, you'd
think that the network connection wizard would sort that
out

I have exactly the same problem (See post above).

The wireless network and internet access via my router(Netgear) were all
working faultlessly under SP1, but I cannot get them to function under SP2.
I use Zone Alarm and have disabled the SP2 firewall, but I suspect that some
part of it is still blocking traffic. I uninstalled SP2 and everything was
back to normal and working fine. The most maddening thing is that another of
my laptops with a Belkin wireless card has upgraded with no problems.

If you find a solution, please report back as it is driving me mad.

When the SP2 firewall is disabled, it leaves TCP/IP in the firewalled
state. Open the TCP/IP properties of the connection, General tab,
Advanced button, Options tab, TCP/IP filtering properties, check Enable
TCP/IP filtering, change all ports/protocols to Permit All from Permit
Only.

Q,

never seen that, actually. When I disable the firewall and check
those filter settings, there is no filtering.

Sometimes don't you wish you'd never downloaded SP2?
I've tried all these suggestions, and still can't even
see the other workstation in the network group - let
alone share files and printers.

My only last thought is that since the laptop uses a
wireless connector, and SP2 now has this as a wireless
connection, and the local are connection is disabled -
would this have anything to do with it?

Thanks Microsoft - SP2 may stop viruses (which my virus
checker did adequately) but I now no longer have a
network and shared printer.

Andrew,

no problems here, loaded SP2 onto 5 computers in the home
network, all are fine. Network is working. Not a trace of a
problem. I even learned how to actually use the firewall (with a
little help of my friends).

I don't think so, but can't be sure. From the network point of
view a wireless connection is similar to a wired one.

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm, if you
haven's already. The text is nearing completeness.

Andrew,

From looking at your later posts, you're getting a bit frustrated. You've
received several excellent suggestions, which are all solution oriented, and
unfortunately the wrong solution.

If you care to try some diagnostics, we may find out what is actually wrong.
Then you may find a solution from that.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is
started.

From each computer, test connectivity:
1) Ping itself by name.
2) Ping itself by ip address.
3) Ping the other by name.
4) Ping the other by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (12 tests total).

From each computer, test shares visibility (use actual name / address of each
computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / exact error displayed in each test (8 tests
total).

Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I tried again to upgrade to SP2 after the download appeared in the system
tray following automatic update. Bizarrely, the upgrade went wthout any
hitch and all net and internet connections worked fine and the Netgeat
wireless utility also functions as before. This has worked on bothe the PCs
that Ihad previously had problems with.

Previously I had applied the upgrade using the original 266MB .exe file
dowlnloaded from Microsoft a week after its release. The Automatic Update
file was 94.80MB.

It shouldn't have made any difference,but....................

I'm glad it has worked despite having spent quite a few hours previously
trying to sort out the apparent problems.

Maybe this will work for others?
