I have an Asrock K7VT4A+ mboard, brand new PC, nothing strange connected /
installed and xp setup won't progress past this point. I've followed various
threads in the forums and the only thing I haven't done is 'flash my bios'.
I'm worried about doing this - anyone advise on easiest way to progress or is
there anything easier / more obvious I haven't tried yet?

I am desperate!!!

Youve formatted the hd ? If not,do again, boot to xp cd,select, recovery, press
enter
for password if prompted, then type:DiskPart In DiskPart, delete the
partition(C:),
then create one,then press Esc key,then type:FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs When its
thru,
type:EXIT Let it restart,reboot to cd,select,install xp.You might
also,power-off
machine,remove battery for 45-60 seconds,reinstall,power-up,enter and reset
BIOS (date,time),then go to exit page,select,load set-up defaults,or
optimal defaults
then if youve added video card etc..adjust for that, then exit BIOS.

Andrew - quick reply appreciated. Excuse me being thick, but I don't get any
options to select anything! If I switch on, the PC goes through its initial
self test (POST I think?) then asks for a boot disk. I insert the XP CD and
it's recognised. The CD then loads up what look like a lot of drivers, but
when the message "setup is starting Windows" comes up, the PC freezes.

Sorry if I'm not being clear.

Just to say - problem overcome. In case it helps others, I changed my memory
stick with one from another PC and setup then continued to completion. Scary!

Hi Billjones85,

I read your story and I'm having exactly the same problem as you had with
XP. Is this really the only way to solve it? The truth is I don't want to
open my pc, otherwise I will loose my guarantee.

Thanks.

Hi Guan - I spent many hours trying to sort this out and did a lot of
digging. I'm afraid your PC will definitely need to be opened up, whether it
be to change motherboard, memory or whichever bit XP doesn't like. Can you
not send it back to the vendor if you bought it as XP compatible?

If you are with a good company like Dell, then they will pretend not to
notice that you opened up your computer. If you're with a bad company
like Sony then they will set traps in there. Dell are excellent. A
friend of mine opened up his Dell PC, made it a complete mess, called
Dell, the guy came round to collect the computer, but my friend didn't
have a box to put it in, and the Dell delivery guy needed a box. So the
delivery guy left and came back with a box, so he collected the
computer. My friend got the computer back the next day, perfect.

So if the company is going to treat you badly for opening up your
computer then you shouldn't want their guarantee anyway, and you chose
a bad company. Also, the best guarantee you can provide yourself with
is your own service. And a great service you can do for yourself is to
learn how to replace pieces of your computer.
