Here goes.

I have a computer that runs a registered Full version of XP Home. The PC is
not being used any longer and therefore I would like to sell the copy of XP
Home to someone else. How do I go about unregistering this copy of XP in
order to sell it? Or is it even required to do so?

Thanks

Bruce

Sorry Bruce, but to do so would violate the EULA. When you install an
operating system on a computer, it becomes married to that system. The only
way to transfer it to another system legally is if there is a hardware
problem, at which point YOU (noone else) can transfer it to another system,
and Microsoft will re-authorize it.

Operating system licenses are non-transferable.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, but this is not at all correct. Bruce states that he has
Full version of WIndows. Retail versions (the Full version is
such a retail version) can indeed be transferred from computer to
computer, as often as desired.

You may be thinking of OEM versions of Windows, for which the
rule is different. An OEM version's license restricts it to the
first computer it's installed on and it can never be moved to
another. But what you state isn't completely true even of OEM
versions; that inabillity to transfer an OEM version to another
computer is true even if there is a hardware problem. In fact, if
a computer with an OEM version of Windows dies, the license to
use that OEM version dies with it.

If it's a retail version then it can be transferred to another owner.
No need to do anything else but you must give them the disk and paperwork.

There is no "de-activation" process, as such.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on and sell,
donate, or give it away. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, the new owner will most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
he/she might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Thanks for the input guys.

So what I am hearing is that OEM's are non transferrable but retail copies
are?

The XP Home version that I own is a retail box and not OEM. I apologize for
not including that in the original post.

Thanks again.

WRONG

A retail license, as I think implied hear, is fully transferable,
provided it is removed from one machine before activating on another.

The ones that may not be transferred are OEM one; either coming
preinstalled, or on an OEM CD marked 'for supply only with a New
Computer' or similar wording

Provided it is a retail one and not one that came preinstalled, or for
which you got an OEM CD, then you remove it from the machine where it
is. Format the disk, for example. Then transfer the CD, the Product
Key and the Certificate of Authenticity, together with any documents you
may have. The new owner installs; When it comes to activation, if it is
more than 120 days since you last did it, he will find it will go
through on the net just like first time. If not, he will have to phone
a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and swap one long
number for another to check back as you type it in

Thanks Alex.
