My two XP home networked computers can see each other in My Network
Connections but I can't open them. I get the usual access denied error
message that you see on this board. One can ping the other but the other one
times out. I have viewed several strings in this discussion group and I have
tried most , if not all, of the recommended fixes with no success. I thought
it was a new wireless network I installed, but I unhooked the WAP and the
problem persists. I have installed and tried to run browstat but when I
install it and try to run it it does not seem to respond. When I type
"browstat status" at c: prompt nothing happens. Help!!!

try to enable guest account. does this work? Also make sure not firewall blocking the traffic.

Oops. I double checked the EZ Firewall on one of the two (my kids) computers
and it was on. When I disabled the firewall completely the networks now
functions properly. On the main computer the EZ Firewall is on and the
network still functions properly. But when I try to turn the EZ Firewall
back on on the kids computer the network is blocked out as before. However,
the Windows XP service pack 2 firewall is on on both of the computers. Is
this enough protection?

Are you using a router? If you are, you don't even need the Windows XP
Internet Firewall. If you are not using a router, then I would wonder if
the computer which breaks things with the firewall active can have the
firewall configured for a gateway device. I recall that Zone Alarm Free
would break the Internet when running on the ICS gateway back when I was
using ICS and a dial-up connection. I gave up ZAF for Tiny Personal
Firewall because TPF could be configured for maximum protection on an ICS
gateway.

Thanks for the reply. I am using a router. A D-links DI-604. During the
process of trying to figure out the problem I noticed that the router has a
firewall, but setting it up was not very intuitive. Looking at it briefly it
seemed to either allow all internet traffic or none at all. But I can't
imagine that's the case. I'll double check it tonight. Thanks.
