XP home network confusion

Hello all,

I Have two computers running XP. I had a direct comp-2-comp network
running fine then all of a sudden nothing. Well actually, one machine
shows the other in network places but can't get a ping. The other
shows nothing in network places but gets good ping.

Have been trying to fix for two days. Tried everything; no ICF,
reinstall, new network card (one on motherboard one on PCI Nowt. Tried
reversing the network cable same problem (not reversed).

Any ideas folks, cos' i'm at the end of my tether and my girlfriend is
gonna kill me if I don't get this sussed and start paying her
attention.

Be sure your firewall in the XP machines is disabled..
