I have had a Compaq laptop for 2 1/2 years. Xp Home OS.
Recently, I have wanted to add a second monitor to be used in split
screen mode.
I have a VGA OUT on the laptop, but am only able to view identical
screens, not split.

My display setting does not include a multi-monitor setting.
I have noted from other discussions that multi is now a feature of
Home, as well as Pro.
Is it possible that I have an earlier version of XP Home, BEFORE MS
made this concession to add multi to the Home version?

I have already been in touch with IT support for the laptop.
We spent two hours on this.
Even after downloading a fix from Compaq, the issue remains.
Tech's only solution was to send it to them for repair, a nightmare
considering it had just returned from there for unrelated.

After this windy backstory, can someone please give me some idea on how
to correct this omission in the display setting? Is it a matter of
installing another card?

Much appreciation in advance

You should be aware that most Laptop computers come with only one
display adapter, either on the motherboard or as an add on card.
In order for you to display two work areas, you will need the ability
to install a second adapter (Not usually possible on a laptop).

The setting you are using now is for your convenience. When you are at
home you can use your CRT/LCD Monitor and when you are on the road you
can use the Laptop display.

Thanks for your response.
The laptop is one of the "desktop replacements" built by Compaq w/17"
screen.
The additional VGA output seems like an odd "convenience", as viewing
the external monitor while using the laptop would involve looking from
the keyboard then OVER the 17" in order to see the external monitor. I
will find out what adapter is already in it, then contact Compaq about
an upgrade.
Thanks again

Have you tried closing the laptop lid while the secondary monitor is
plugged in?
This is usually the way to operate your laptop while at home.
