I have a HP desktop thats about 3 yrs old and has XP Home on it. Its in
desperate need of a reformat & reinstall. My problem is this computer didn't
come with any XP media, can I use someone elses' media with the product key
on the back of the machine?

Thanks!

Hp pcs have a product key number on the back, but it has no relevence to
microsoft xp,it strictly deals with hp.More than likely youre hp pc came with
hp recovery cds with xp on them,to reinstall xp,you'll need either the
exact cds
from hp for that pc,or retail copy of xp.

Have you checked the manual for your HP system to see exactly
what the procedure is to reinstall the operating system? It's
possible that the XP installation files are on a hidden
partition on your hard drive.

The last HP I worked on had a procedure that allowed you one
shot at creating recovery disks. Have you looked into this
possibility? You may be able to order a set from HP.

Did you go to HP's web site and research this issue? Here are a
couple of articles that you may find helpful.

I would recommend you exhaust all possible means of obtaining
recovery disks through HP before you try using another
installation CD. Even if you get an OEM CD to accept that key
you're probably going to end up having to use the phone option
when it comes to activation.

Good luck

What a ridiculous response, of course the product key on the COA has
something to do with XP, it's a valid XP product key, which can be used to
install XP from an authentic OEM CD.

As long as the CD you borrow is of the exact same flavor as you HP, which is
XP Home OEM, you cannot use a Pro or retail CD.

I did Make a set of recovery disks a while back. There is also a System
Recovery partition, would this have windows setup files?

If you made recovery disks, why not use them to reinstall XP?

If there's a System Recovery partition, follow the directions
on the HP web site.

Keep in mind that before you attempt to reinstall XP you should
back up all of your important files.

If you're still unsure what to do, post back with information
about your computer. Include the make and model #.

Good luck
