XP Home Install Options???

Jack

I have a WinME machine that I want to upgrade to XP. My
machine came preloaded (OEM) with ME, so I don't have an
original WinME CD. I would like to try and upgrade, but
I am told that if it does not work I would need the
orginal WinME CD to do a full install if I buy the
Upgrade Version of XP. My question is if I buy the full
version of XP Home Edition, will it still give me the
option to try and do an upgrade? I don't want to buy the
upgrade version of XP since I will not have the option
for a full install should the upgrade not work out
because I don't have the WinME CD just the preload
image. I tried to ask this question on the Microsoft
Support site, but you must have PID number first. Thanks
in advance for any help you can give me.

Hello
You can do a full install with the upgrade version of XP
all you will need is an old win.98, 98SE, or ME CD. All
you have to do is boot from the XP Upgrade CD and follow
the directions and delete your partitions and reformat
you can do that with the XP CD, at one point it will ask
you to put in the old CD and that is just to verify that
you owned a previous version. Now when you do this you
will lose everything on your harddrive, you can just do
an upgrade by putting the CD in with the puter running
and it will install with your previous version and use
your file format (FAT32)I assume, and all your saved
files should be intact. You can do that and if you want
the NTFS file system you can switch after installing, but
you will then lose everyfile that is saved in the FAT32
format.
Hope this helps

Hello
I suggest that if you just want the upgrade to take the
unopen full version back and purchase the upgrade and
save some $$$$. I am sure the full version will give you
the upgrade option just put the CD in with the puter
running and do not boot from the CD.

This is similar to what I want to do, but with WIN98SE.

So, the upgrade will give you a choice to do a "clean" install of XP and the
ability to switch from FAT32 to NTFS?

This is what I really want, but didn't think it was an option with upgrade.

Anyway, I also did NOT receive a WIN98SE CD with this computer (Compaq).

I had a "full restore" CD. So, when the upgrade asks me to put in the
original WIN98SE CD, witll this work ?

Hello
No the restore CD will not work you will need a
95,98,98SE,ME CD maybe a friend has one and then turn
your puter off and boot with the XP CD in and when it
says on the screen (Boot From CD Press any Key) you will
need to hit a key, message only last for about 5 sec. so
be ready. Then just follow the instuctions, it will walk
you through the clean install. You can do the clean
install with the XP Upgrade it will ask you to put in the
previous version just for a sec. to prove you had one in
order to use the upgrade.
Hope this helps
