Upgrade (?) from WinME to Win XP Home Dual Boot ?

B

Ben Alias

I have a system with two physical hard drives. Drive 1 has one
partition, C: , and has WinME installed on it.

Drive 2 is partitioned into D: , E:, and F: drives.

I have a "full install" CD of WinME that I got with my system ( a
Dell, though several years old now).

What I'd like to do is install Win XP Home (w. Service Pack 2) on my
D: drive and have a dual boot system. I would like to have a "clean
install" of XP on Drive D:

Can I do this by buying the XP Home *upgrade version*? Or do I need
to buy the XP Home "Full" Version?

What I need to know is what the XP upgrade version looks for during
the installation to determine that I am a valid ME owner. Is the
installed ME on C: good enough? Is my ME CD good enough? Or, is it
going to insist on seeing ME installed on D: before it will install
itself on D: ?

The clerk at the retail store I talked with suggested that the last
option was the case, and that I would either have to have ME installed
on D: and then "install over" ME (which I do not want to do) or else
buy the full version of XP.

Any information you can provide would be appreciated. I've looked at
several webpages about installing XP and not seen this dual boot issue
addressed with sufficient clarity for me to know which version of the
software to buy.

the upgrade win version merely requires sight of the qualifying version cd
ie pop win9* in the cd drive when win complains it cannot find..........

Setting aside any licensing questions (I don't think there really are any) then
the clerk at the store is incorrect. Boot from the CD and choose install. You
will be asked if you wish to overwrite ME (it shows as recommended) or install
to a different partition (it might actually say something about custom). Choose
the option you want which in this case is not to overwrite ME.

Bear in mind that a PC designed before Windows XP was issued (Windows 98 or
ME) might not be stable with XP installed.

Very true, depending entirely upon the computer's user(s)...
