XP (Home) Hotkey Hidden

John

I had the F8 key assigned as a program launch hotkey in the
"properties" page of a desktop shortcut. One way or another that
desktop icon got deleted and the key F8 no longer appeared in
Properties of my new desktop shortcut. The hotkey F8 still works
to launch the program, but any future change in the F8 key
assignment will be impossible, for me. Of course, it is still
possible to assign an additional hotkey to launching the program.

I then installed PC Magazine's "Hot Key Detective" program, but
it doesn't display the F8 key assignment.

Any advice?

Thanks,

John

Ayush, nothing personal, but I don't think anyone should ever run a file
sent to him by a stranger on a newsgroup. I'm certainly not accusing you of
any malicious intent, but running files sent by strangers is in general a
prescription for disaster.

Even with your good record of helping people here, the recipient of the file
has no way of ascertaining that the file really came from you, and not from
some imposter.

So I always recommend against sending people files here, and against anyone
who has been sent a file accepting it.

No problem.

I am pasting the text of file here so everyone can see it:
--------------
ws = new ActiveXObject("WScript.Shell");
fs=new ActiveXObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
tmpPh=ws.SpecialFolders("StartMenu")+"\\"+fs.GetTempName()+".lnk"

sc=ws.CreateShortcut(tmpPh);
sc.Hotkey="F8";
sc.Save();

sc=ws.CreateShortcut(tmpPh);
sc.Hotkey="";
sc.Save();

fs.DeleteFile(tmpPh)
--------------

To OP- Copy paste the text in a notepad file then save it as js.

Good Luck, Ayush.

Good, that's a much better way to do it, and thanks for understanding.

Ayush: I apologize for the extra messages. I have not been
seeing my own posts in this group. Something wrong with my news
server, perhaps. I even spent $19 to update my Agent newsreader,
but that didn't help. I don't know why I finally saw this
message.

Ken: Thanks for the warning, but I didn't download the file.
When I saw the javascript extension, it scared the **** out of
me.

I don't blame you. Although I think Ayush is someone who can be trusted,
prudence is good.
