Every time I start my PC a folder called System32 appears on my desktop. As
this contains critical info I have been trying to hide it via the system
configuration utility but do not know what I am looking for on the start-up
tab. Can anyone help?

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by
an incomplete program removal, in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys. It can also
be caused by an entry in these same keys that starts with a " / ."
