XP Home Edition registration loop

I have recently re-installed on a formatted HDD my nephew's laptop, Win XP
Home edition using the key shown on the bottom of the machine. Everything
went well, even registered the software on the net. when I come to log in I
am told that this version of Win XP must be registered before it is used. So
I select register and the machine tells me that the software is already
registered. How can I stop this loop please?

Are you certain it is asking you to REGISTER?
Registration is optional. Activation is required.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Yes sorry, it's been a long day. I meant Activate. The actual wording is - "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?" Whe I click yes it says it is already activated.
