XP Home Edition Problems

I am using Windows XP Home Edition on a Packard Bell PC with the following
spec...

- 256 RAM
- 40 GB HDD
- Standard Gfx & Sound Card

I installed XP on my machine some time ago and never bothered to connect it
to the Internet as it was not necessary. However, somehow my machine appears
to have become corrupted and I cannot install any new software (I always get
the 'setup.exe has failed please report this problem to Microsft Send Error
Report). Seeing as I am not connected to the internet this message gets
highly annoying. This is not just one program that is causing this problem,
but any program I try to run. Unfortunately my system restore does not back
date enough to rid me of this problem.

I have tried running a clean installation from the setup CD but I get the
error message. I have tried running a clean installation by booting from the
CD but aftr XP has inspected by Hardware Configuration I get the error
'BAD_CONFIG_INFO' and setup suggests that I restart or remove any new
hardware/software added.

This is driving me crazy as I am not a novice user but I really cannot solve
this error. I have tried installing XP onto my slave drive instead (I just
switched them over) but the same BAD_CONFIG_INFO arises. The XP disc I am
using has never been a problem, it is legitimate and was bought with a
laptop.

I am going crazy, any ideas people?

I am using the original XP Home edition CD that I used to install originally.
It is the full version CD that came with my other Toshiba Laptop and I have
installed it onto my Packard Bell machine.

Windows 98 was previously running on my PC and with the help of a friend I
was able to format the drive and then install XP by inserting the mentioned
disc.

Since then the only hardware added is a WinFast Capture Card and I had to
remove my graphics card as it was causing problems when I changed my monitor
to a larger size.

I know that there is no problem with the XP disc as I have used it before.

Hope you can help
