XP Home DNS problems

I have a winxp home that can access the network, and everything by IP. It
wont accept DNS
however. I have tried my own DNS server and my ISPs DNS server. I
checked the host file and that is normal.
could this be a spyware issue? I ran hijack this and dont see any abnormal
entries.

any ideas appreciated

thanks

Could you explain what you mean by it won't accept DNS.

I hope you don't mind me crashing in but I too have a very similar problem -
specifically: internet access by IP address but not by domain name.

A workgroup using a shared ADSL USB modem on an XP home SP2 PC, which gives
perfect internet access to itself and peers of 98 & ME; but an XP Pro SP2
peer, can only access the internet by typing the IP address of the site in
question. The translation of the URL from domain name to IP address fails.

I've tried manually assigning the ISP designated DNS server IPs to the XP
Pro PC but the result is the same.

File sharing works fine, and I've also tried disabling the Windows firewall
temporarily. Nothing so far has helped.
