essential difference between XP home and XP pro ?

I know some of them like number of connected client limits
Security issues
Networking stuff

But is there a clear list somewhere ?

thnaks for your help

One additional difference that is not mentioned on the above sites is
that in a peer-to-peer networking configuration Windows XP Home allows
only 5 concurrent logins to a shared resource whereas XP Pro allows
10.

Good luck

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

For details go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

Pardon me for jumping in here. I just ordered a laptop with XP Home on it.
I thought I read someplace that XP Home won't connect to a Windows 2003
Server domain. I can't believe it since I have a Win98SE and Win98ME laptop
connecting but if its true, I need to change the OS in my laptop. Please
let me know if I have a problem. Thanks in advance.

If you mean actually logging into a Domain, then yes you'll need XP
Professional. If it's just accessing domain resources such as shares &
printers then XP home will suffice.

Yes it is true home version cannot join a domain.

Pardon me for jumping in here. I just ordered a laptop with XP Home on it.
I thought I read someplace that XP Home won't connect to a Windows 2003
Server domain.

It can connect, but it can not act as part of the domain - meaning there
is no logon. If there is an available user/password on the 2003 server,
the XP Home computer can map to a share using the user/password, but it
can no just join the domain. This is the same as 98.

I should be OK then. I need to login, run outlook and syncronize mail and
then map a couple drivers to the server so can run batch files to back up
data to and from the laptop. Sounds like I can do that. I could do
that with my 98 machines. Am I correct, I can do the above? If so, I'll
sleep lots better. Thanks.

Yes, it's true, and you can't join a domain with XP Home. That is
one of the differences between Professional and Home.

The WinXP Home and WinXP Pro versions are _identical_ when it
comes to performance, stability, and device driver and software
application compatibility, but are intended to meet different
functionality, networking, security, and ease-of-use needs, in
different environments. The most significant differences are that
WinXP Pro allows up to 10 simultaneous inbound network connections
while WinXP Home only allows only 5, WinXP Pro is designed to join a
Microsoft domain while WinXP Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro supports
file encryption and IIS. (Oh, and WinXP Pro usually costs roughly $100
USD more than WinXP Home.)
