Please help :-)

Two PCs one runs windows XP home the other Windows XP Pro both servicepack
1, both properly registered and activated.

Both machines have add on firewire (PCI) adapters. ( Do not want to use
these for PC to PC connection, too far)

The Pro machine has Ethernet adapter on board and the Home has a 10/100
Level one PCI Ethernet card.

Ethernet adapters are connected by a properly functioning (tested elsewhere)
cross-over UTP cable (about 25 meters in length)

Pro was manually configured with IP 192.168.0.1 and mask 255.255.255.0 and a
member of workgroup "MSHOME"

Home was also manually configured with IP 192.168.0.18, mask 255.255.255.0
and also a member of workgroup "MSHOME"

now trouble begins.

They refuse to see each other >Network neighborhood> etc..

The Pro pings Home but when I try to ping the Pro from Home it times out. No
way to map a shared drive from either machine using IPs
(\\192.168.0.18\sharedc) where sharedc is the shared as name for the C drive
of machine Home. It tells me that I do not have permissions and I should
seee the administrator of " MSHOME" (the Home does not even ping so no point
to try and map)

Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling services , protocols, hardware,
software No Changes :-(

This thing has ruined my weekend and It has gotten me so mad I cannot think
of what may be the problem.

I thank in advance anyone that tries to Help

Thanks

BT

change home to 192.168.0.2 and leave subnet mask as 255.255.255.0, make sure
firewall is not running on either machine. Then try pinging each other. Should
work

Pro has much more built in security. Do both machines have
login passwords? Before you can see the Pro machine you
must have login rights and properly log in. Normally the
first time you do this a window will open and ask you to
log in with a check box that will let you automatically
log in afterwards. Do you have firewall protection turned
on? Turn this off, both XP and Norton.

BT,

To successfully share resources on computer A with computer B, you
must be logged on to computer B with an account and password identical
to one setup on computer A. I don't think that's your only problem
though.

Please post here the output from "ipconfig /all" from both computers.

Please go to Home, ping in sequence, and post result here:
1) 127.0.0.1
2) Home (by ip address)
3) Home (by name)

Does Pro by any chance have ICF enabled? If so, disable it.

Cheers,

Chuck
