XP Home and 2000 Networking problems

I have a new XP Home computer with a (an old) Microsoft 500 Base station
connected to a 2000 workstation with a Belkin wireless network adapter. I
want to be able to access the files and printers connected to the XP Home
computer. I see the XP Home computer on "My Network Places" / "Computers near
me" but when I click on the XP Home it says "\\XP Home is not accessible."
and "The network path was not found". On the XP Home computer I have disabled
the firewall and set the sharing up for the drive properly. Also, The
Microsoft Base station shows both computers in the adminstration settings but
does not show tha 2000 Computer on the list of Devices or the name of the XP
Home (just an icon). Any ideas crew?

Peter,

Irregularities in Network Neighborhood, like yours, are common in Windows
Networking. There are several possible causes, and we probably should dig a bit
deeper before trying to guess at the problem. Please read my article, and
linked articles, and provide diagnostics here when possible.

Sir Chuck,
Upon reading your post and learning of the potential issues with the Norton
firewall (or worm protection) I realized you were on to something good. Upon
turning the personal firewall off, I was pleased to learn it was not a
Microsoft issue at all and I am now able to access files and printers on the
XP Home computer. Fantastic job.

I will go back and try to refine the Norton capabilites that I turned off to
see if some of the protection can be added back in.

Double cheers, BooYa!
Peter

Thanks for your feedback, Peter. Particularly, thanks for noting that you will
now try configuring the firewall properly, so as to continue protecting
yourself. Too many people, I suspect, turn their firewall off, and leave it
off, because they fear losing file sharing more than they fear losing
protection.
