Hi,

I have Windows XP home.

1st question:
On installation I defined only one user without password. He is in the
administrators group. But I have never been asked for a password of the user
named "Administrator". Does he have a password? What is it? When I log off
and then type Ctrl-Alt-Del (nothing happens), then again I type Ctrl-Alt-Del
and get the old-style login box. I type "Administrator" as the user. But
what shall I enter as password? If I keep the password empty, I am told, I
am not allowed to log on, due to a restriction of the account.

2nd question:
What do I need to do, in order to be allowed to see the contained files in
the System Volume Information folder?

TIA
Heiner

If you did not set a password, then just hit enter with the password field
blank. Whether or not you should set a password is entirely up you.

You should password Administrator at least for security reasons.
If you did not assign a password, there is no password and anyone can
get in by leaving password blank.
Administrator seems to have no password, but as I wrote below,
I have no permission to log on as Administrator.
How do I get that permission?
System Volume Information is the System Restore data.
You should not touch it directly or you may corrupt the data.
I do not want to change these files, only view.
But I have no permission to view them.
How do I get that permission?

account.
How can I release that restriction?

Just reset the Admininstrator password using your user admin account.

When I log on as the named admin user, then the Administrator user is not
listed.
So how can I reset his password?

Reboot to Safe Mode and add Administrator password:
Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
Select Administrator.
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel.
From there are options including adding a password.

What you would view in System Volume Information is not data you can
use by seeing.
Taking Ownership should give access, #9 on this link:

In Home, the reserve account called Administrator is only available if
you boot to Safe Mode (hitting F8 as Bios info goes to black to get the
menu). Administrator will then be on Welcome. If you have not
knowingly set a password for it, that is almost certainly null

From that Administrator logon, in Safe Mode, go to the folder, r-click,
Properties, Security page, click Advanced and use the Ownership page to
assign ownership to your regular admin status user account (checking the
'apply to subobjects' box.

Don *not* attempt to fiddle with files in that folder unless you have
disabled System Restore and rebooted. In that case, only, delete all
files that may be left in it before starting SR up again

That worked. Thanks a lot!

After normal boot in XP home I do not have a security tab in the folder's
properties, where I can take ownership. After safe mode boot I can no longer
find the folder "System volume information". So where can I take ownership?
