Xp help and support center

Hello, I am new to this newsgroups so I hope I am posting this question in
the right section. My question deal with the Help and Support Center in XP.
I am running XP pro svc 2, with a DSL connection that is always on but when I
open the h&s center the did you know? section always displays this message:

When you are connected to the Internet, this area will display links to
timely help and support information. If you want to connect to the Internet
now, start the New Connection Wizard and see how to establish a Web
connection through an Internet service provider.

I have read several threads about this issue on other sites but none of the
suggestions work. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue or is this a
system wide problem with Microsoft?

I have never encountered this specific issue on any of my customer's
systems. What does your computer have listed in Control Panel -
Internet Options on the Connections tab?

And congratulations. This is the first posting that I have seen in
many months that is exactly "on topic" for this newsgroup.

There is nothing there listed under the Dial up and virtual private network
area. I hope this is the section you are talking about

"Did You Know..." not updating is a common issue, don't worry too much.

When it can't update the "headlines", and it has no previous info in its
cache, it displays this (misleading) message, otherwise it displays the
last thing it has from the cache; often this won't update for months.

Apparently you've never sucessfully gotten any D.Y.K. headlines into your
cache.

To validate that H&S can indeed connect to the internet, do a Search in
H&S, and check for "MS Knowledge Base" results (3rd section down). If
there are KB hits then its internet connection is working fine. Try
searching for NETBEUI, that should turn up some KB hits.

So if I get kb hits, then I shouldn't worry about this it will update
eventually on it's own?

On the main Internet Options window is the option "never dial a
connection" selected? It may be grayed out but it will still show a
dot in the center if that option is in effect.

Type Help & Support in Help & Support. It's americian spelling in Windows - wrong spelling means no searching - you have to watch this with colour and similar words - ms is just too dammed arrogrant to give a f!ck, the maggots. Hit 37 of the knowledge base has this to say (if H&S doesn't work here is a web link http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307164&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH).

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you use the New Connection Wizard to create the broadband connection. The New Connection Wizard does not by default enable proxy automatic detection for broadband connections that require authentication.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, edit the connection settings for the broadband connection to enable automatic detection: 1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab.
4. Under Dial-up and VPN Settings, click the broadband connection, click Settings, and then click Automatically detect settings.
5. Click OK.
