I use W98SE, so this is to help someone else.

Does XP inherently have a unzip function? Activate by simply clicking to
open a zip file?

Yes, it has ZIP functions in the shell extensions and also drag-and-drop.
It's pretty limited, it has no RAR support or no 3rd party archive utility
would even be needed.
