XP full won't upgrade? huh?

I have a full copy of xp home and i'd just finished
installing a number of new components for my computer. I
originally had xp pro on the machine, but because of all
the old crap I had on my hd and a couple of reinstalls,
the version I had became unstable and pretty quickly
wouldn't even boot. Explorer would crash everytime I
booted. So I decided to cut my losses and format and
start from scratch.

As I was in the middle of formatting the drive with the
Windows XP home CD, my temp alarm went off, and I reset
my computer (after asking my local geek if that would be
okay). Now everytime I try to start the setup process
again, it'll go through the user agreement then tell me
that I don't have a valid Windows CD or it's not the full
version.

There's no indication on the package, or when I bought
it, that my version is upgrade only. The CD itself is
immaculate. So how do I tell for sure if it's an upgrade
or not, OR how do I beat it into submission? Anybody got
a stick?
