I am using MS- Windows XP on a notebook computer. My
computer does not have a 3 1/2" floppy drive.

I want to do a full Backup of my XP system.

I get an error message:
You will not be able to restore an ASR backup without the
system information stored on this diskette. Please refer
to on-line help for further assistance. [OK]

The Backup Wizard tells me that I do not have a 3 1/2"
floppy, which is true.

Help. Can I use my D: CD-R drive as a floppy?
YES____; NO______

I would like to keep thing simple.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

Jeff

Greetings,

No...

You can use a third party software to backup your hard drive and save it as
an image. Here is one fantasic software that can do the job for you:

Acronis True Image - http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/

Thanks and good luck!

You can backup directly to your hard drive and then copy the file to a CD-R.
If you have third party CD burning software installed that includes a packet
writing component, Nero and Easy Media Creator both have such components as
do most others, then you can backup directly to CD.

Hi,

I have used Acronis True Image and love it. Used to use Norton Ghost.
True Image will back up to CD, Network Drive, 2nd drive, etc, without
having to re-boot.

True Image appears to be an excellent product. I haven't recommended it
because I haven't used it.

True Image does not appear to have a CD burning component. Hence, without
third party CD burning software with a packet writing component, I don't
think it can back up directly to CD either, certainly not with XP's built in
CD writing function.

True Image will allow images to be written directly to all removeable media
except Tape Drives.

That's fine but as far as I know, it cannot do so unless the proper CD
burning software is installed. Drive Image will allow you to write an image
directly to CD but you must have the proper burning software installed. If
you are burning directly to CD, what CD writing software do you have
installed on your system?

You cannot write directly to CD unless packet writing software is installed
on the system unless it essentially masters a CD much as you would an audio
CD. XP's built in CD writing software cannot write directly to CD. If it
uses some mastering technique, then it is not copying a compressed file to
the CD, rather it is copying an exact image; please explain, does it copy a
compressed image file to the CD or if you read the CD, you see the entire
contents of your hard drive as imaged without using your imaging software to
open an image file. Under those circumstances I can see how it might
accomplish the task without additional software.

Drive Image and Ghost can write directly to CD but only as mentioned above
and it's an image file that needs to be opened using the imaging application
before you can see the actual image.
