Can't Find External Drive For Backup

T

I am running with Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have connected an
external hard drive to my desktop using a USP port. When I look at My
Computer the external hard drive is shown as drive G.
I now go to Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.
This brings up the Backup & Restore Wizard. I click on Next and get the
option to Backup or Restore files and settings. I seleck Backup and get
a screen asking What Do I Want To Backup. I choose All Information On
This Computer and get a screen asking for the Backup Type, Destination
and Name. In the Destination drop down menu I do not see the G drive as
a place to store the backup data. How do I get the G drive to be shown
in this location?
I also notice that a floppy disk will have to be created. I do not have
a floppy drive, just 2 CD/DVD drives. How can I get around this
requirement?
Thanks for any and all help

An ASR backup needs a floppy to implement the restore procedure. There is no
way around this - except a $30 external floppy drive.

Or purchase a specific Backup app, rather than using the default MS one that
was designed some 15+yrs ago

The MS backup routine is very limited in terms of what it will do.

Get some real third-party backup software that was deisgned to work with
external drives.

Also, always ask how you will do the restore function, if XP will not boot,
or if the internal hard drive has to be replaced. Good backup software will
have a provision for booting the PC, without using XP.

I have had good luck with Acronis True Image, but other like Norton GHOST.
The latest version of either will handle USB.

There are alos some freeware backup programs that might be worth
investigating. Start by looking at:

Click the Browse button to the right of the Destination dropdown.......&
point it to your G drive. It works for me.
