XP Freezes during boot up

I have a mini cube PC with Windows XP installed. It has been working
fine for many months and no changes to the configuration have been made
recently.

Last week the machine crashed. After re-booting XP goes through the
start up, the Windows XP Home splash screen appears (with the green
progress bar). After that the screen clears and the machine then sits
with a black screen. There is a little hard disk activity at first and
then nothing.

Re-starting then offers the opportunity to select safe mode or try the
last good configuration. The last good simply repeats the above.

Selecting safe mode provides a list of programs and files being
processed. The last file to be processed prior to freezing is Mup.sys

I'm hoping somebody can offer a potential solution 'cos I'm stumped...

I've had that problem with a laptop of mine. I restored it using the
manufacturer's disks then tried to do the Windows Updates and when it was
done updating, it rebooted and went into a same kind of loop that you
experienced. If you don't want to restore your computer (You'll lose
everything on it) You might try a WinXP repair. You'll need your WinXP
operating system disk (if your computer came with one or you purchased one).
Here's the steps another person, Jerry, provided me:

1. Turn off any anti virus program and BIOS-level protection
2. Make sure your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM is set to first priorty start-up device
3. Insert your Windows XP in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM and restart your
computer
4. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" prompt appears press any key
5. The computer will start and check your hardware
6. Hit ENTER
7. Then hit F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement
8. Here is where your current Windows XP installation is listed
9. Now press "R" to start the automatic repair process.

This worked for me. After this repair process, you'll need to do the
Windows Updates again. I recommend you only do two updates at a time, and
save the service pack 1 for last. Good luck.
