Need help urgently. My Machine runs on WIN XP Home. Use a USB Modem
(Duxbury) that passes all the normal modem tests, so it seems to be
working well. My problem is when I connect to my Service provider.
Modem dials and then machine freezes completely on connection. Have to
use the power button to restart machine. Have now formatted and
reinstalled thrice. What settings can cause this? How can this be
fixed?
Regards

Is it an external self-powere dial-up USB modem such as
this one:

031.asp

Was it working properly previously?

If so, it's probably a USB problem, not a problem with the
modem.

How is the USB Controller shown in the Device Manager?

I would visit your motherboard's site and download and
install the latest driver updates, one of which is a USB
Controller, which could have become corrupt.

Apart from that, I would inspect the jack that goes into
the wall socket, and the phone wall socket itself for any
damage.

Bad modem?

Modem is pretty much the standard USB Modem (V.92). Motherboard is
Gigabyte GA-8I875U. The bitch of it is that I can not find the USB
Drivers there. Still looking around for it. Tried other things last
night, Registry Cleaning, Advances codes for connection to Service
Provider on Modem. Nothing helps.

Does the Device Manager show any issue for the modem? If so, does it list a
code number and have you tried to troubleshoot it? Is your system clear of
sypware, etc? Have you checked the events log?

You can use Event Viewer to view and manage the event logs, gather
information about hardware and software problems, and monitor Windows
security events.

To view the event log: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or
Start/Run/eventvwr.

To review Shutdown Event Tracker data, Open Event Viewer. Click System Log,
scroll to the Event column, and find entries with the number 1075.

And also:

Go to Start/Run/Msinfo32/Hardware Resources, Components/Problem Devices and
Software Environment/Windows Error Reporting.

Go to Help and Support/Pick a Task (left side)/Use Tools to view.../(left
pane)My Computer Information/(right pane)View the status of my system
hardware and software/Hardware/Update and Troubleshooters.

I think I´ve solved a similar problem by uninstalling IPV6.
Syntax (in command window): "ipv6 uninstall"
My notebook is now working fine without freezing.
I´ve posted a report on the hassles I had with "XP freezes on dialup
on another forum.
Interested to hear if this helps.

More exactly: "XP freezes for 10 Minutes after Dialup" was the header
