XP format/reinstall

Having browsed the news group for answers before posting
this, and following jupiter jones' advice given to other
users I am still unable to format/reinstall XP. When I
reboot with my cdrom as the first thing that boots, it
still goes through to the log-in part of XP. How can I
stop this from happening, format my hdd and re-install XP?

Ian;
Did you set the BIOS to boot to CD before hard drive?
If so, reboot, immediately start tapping a key each second.
Follow the instructions to install Windows XP.

If not, is the option to boot to CD not available?
