XP Firewall

Chris

I know the following ports need to be opened for ICF to
work for file and printer sharing. However, I'm not sure
exactly how to go about this.

Here are the ports I need to open:

UDP ports: 137, 138, and 445
TCP ports: 139 and 445

However, when I right-click the LAN properties and click
the Advanced tab, check "Protect my computer and
network...", click Settings, and then click "Add" to open
the ports I don't know where to enter these port numbers.

When I click Add, I see Description of service, name or
ip address, External port for this service, and internal
port for this service and two radio buttons for TCP and
UDP.

Exactly how do I go about this???

Get a third party firewall, like zonealarm(free) or
nortons internet security.
Windows xp firewall will stop network conenctions.

It shouldn't if I open those ports. I want
to use the XP firewall and I would appreciate
any help I can get.

The description is your choice.
The name or ipaddress should be "localhost" (no quotes)
The internal and external port numbers will be equal for any ICF entries

You will need to create 5 entries, one for each port below

Read XP's help for ICF. It clearly states that using ICF on a LAN may
interfere with network communications. ICF is intended for use only on a
computer connected directly to the Internet. Take the advice given to you
and get Zonealarm, sygate or some other free firewall.
