Hi

Anybody who knows if the firewall function included in XP is good enough? Or
should I use an additional firewall SW like Norton (or something else...)?

Regards

NOT good enough It only protects traffic 1 way ,just use 1 only ,if you
put Norton or Zone Alarm on turn the Xp off
it's in your network connections ,right click on your connection ,advanced
tab ,untick firewall
good luck

The XP firewall is fine when it comes to protecting from external attack.

If you have something like a trojan on your PC however it will not protect
you as it does not prevent or ask for outgoing communication permission.

If you keep your PC virus program up to date - then the XP firewall is fine.

Hello Björn!

Can't say that I'm fully satisfied with only MS own
Firewall. At first the file "alg.exe" (firewall-file)
does not start until after the OS is running every
function. This means that if you got ADSL or broadband
the firewall starts after you have been connected (if
only if you are connected upon start). Happends to me
time to time.

Another thing that the firewall does not support is IPv6
which means that attacks from clients or servers using
that can drill holes in the "poor mans firewall" which MS
self calls it.

I suggest a firewall with several tweaking possibilities
like the one you named (Internet Security 2004 or
likewise). On top of this I suggest that you install
Lavasofts awardwinning AD-Aware 6.0 and Ghost 12 Popup
killer (the last one for anoying popups).

The last in this matter I want to mention is that Anti
Virus (updated frequently) is a most.

Good luck in your Surfing.

I run XP firewall and McAfee together. They work fine.
Norton will not do this. Good Luck

Greetings --

WinXP's built-in firewall is fine at stopping incoming attacks, and
hiding your ports from probes. It doesn't give you any alarms to tell
you that it is working, though. What WinXP also does not do, is
protect you from any Trojans or spyware that you might download and
install inadvertently. It doesn't monitor out-going traffic at all,
much less block (or at least ask you about) the bad or the
questionable out-going packets.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better, and are much more
easily configured, and there are a free versions of each readily
available. Even Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall is superior,
although it does take a heavier toll of performance then do ZoneAlarm,
Kerio, or Sygate.
