XP Files shown as either black or blue

Do you know why when using Windows XP, files in various
windows such as explorer are either listed in black or
blue? It doesn't looke like it has to do with creation
date. Thank you for any information you may have.

Blue files are compressed.

Hi, Cindy.

Most likely, the files shown in blue are compressed. This saves disk space,
and the ability to do this for files in NTFS volumes is built into WinXP.

For details, click Start | Help and Support, then search for "compression".

Blue files have been compressed by the operating system to save space. This
is not something it does by itself. Someone has to ask the system to
selectively do this. May be that some "clean up" program does this
automatically, as I see many posters here who seem to have no idea as to how
this occurred!

Greetings --

By design, WinXP compresses files that do not get used frequently,
and, if you've left the default settings intact, displays those files
in blue.

If you wish to change this behavior, in Windows Explorer, click
Tools > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings: Show encrypted or
compressed NTFS files in color.
